The Colombo Kings have recorded a comprehensive win over the high-riding Jaffna Stallions in the 11th match of Lanka Premier League 2020.
The Colombo boys were happy to chase, as that seemed to be their stronger suit in the tournament. Furthermore, the fact that Jaffna Stallions struggled while batting first in their previous games would have made the decision for Angelo Mathews to bat first after winning the toss, easier.
Qais Ahmad wrecked Jaffna top-order
Qais Ahmed, the Afghan leg-spinner, was the one to hand Jaffna a killer blow very early in the game as he dismantled three key pillars of the Jaffna batting line up in his first 2 overs.
Viiking triumph trial by spin courtesy Angelo Perera half-century
He was brought into the attack in the 8th over and he dismissed the in-form Avishka Fernando, who was starting to look dangerous. In his very next over he sneaked a top-spinner through Shoaib Malik’s defence, and in the same over managed to send Minod Bhanuka back to the hut after being caught in the deep.
The recovering game was absent today
Jaffna had a poor start as their scorecard read 39 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. It only kept going south as Qais Ahmad’s blow was followed by 3 more wickets in each of the next 3 overs. Dhanajaya de Silva, Thisara Perera and Chathuranga de Silva – all of who played vital roles in the previous games to rescue Jaffna from trouble – walked back without making an impression.
Dushmantha Chameera version 2.0
Dushmantha Chameera, who was impressive with intimidating pace and effective variations, brought his form through to this game as he dismissed Johnson Charles in just the second over of the game.
Avishka stars for Jaffna as they remain untouched
The speedster was known as the kid with potential but never really lived up to it, he was not consistent with his line and length and had brittle bowling action. Now he looks more composed in his approach to the crease and hits great areas consistently. He picked the important wicket of Thisara Perera by rushing him with pace.
Wanindu the superstar
Wanindu Hasaranga is in the process of being crowned the new finisher of Sri Lanka. The 22-year old struck a golden 41 runs off 23 balls for Jaffna, which gave them something to bowl at.
He was excellent again with the ball in hand as he kept his 4 overs for just 23 runs and picked up 2 wickets.
Viyaskanth caught some eyes
Jaffna handed a debut for the local boy Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, who bowled exceptionally well against three world class batsmen in Andre Russell, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal. The leg-spinner ended with figures of 1 for 29 in his 4 overs.
Russell & Mathews, the silent killers
The duo bowled 6 overs between themselves for just 21 runs, leaving the Stallions in drought for runs. Mathews was especially outstanding as he bowled 2 overs in the powerplay for just 5 runs, and Wanindu looked comfortable on the crease to see him walk back immediately.
Chandimal all the way
Dinesh Chandimal seems to be loving the opening spot he has been handed at Colombo Kings, as the right-hander has already struck two big knocks in the tournament. Chandimal faced the first and the last ball of their innings with a calm and composed knock of 68 runs to drive his team to victory.
He was well supported by Andre Russell (32) and Angelo Mathews (22), which made the chase look so easy.
In the end, the Jaffna Stallions have lost a game in LPL 2020 courtesy well planned and executed efforts from the Colombo Kings.
