Senanayake will start his duties from the South Africa ODI series up until the conclusion of the Asia Cup, which will be played in September in the UAE.

Former Anandian first took over the post in 2008 from former Sri Lankan skipper Anura Tennekoon. After another couple of stints, he was most recently reinstated in 2016 for the England tour and the successful home series against Australia, but was removed from the post citing the ‘Rotation Policy’.

Since late 2017, Senanayake was also in-charge of the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team for the West Indies and Bangladesh tours where the second-string team did quite well away from home.

With a couple of players breaking the ‘Code of Conduct’ in recent times, the microscope will be on the ‘Discipline’ of the players, hence Senanayake will have plenty of work on his hands as he takes over the mantle from Asanka Gurusinha who has been appointed as the Chief Cricket Operations officer.

“I am extremely thankful, grateful for this opportunity. In any professional sport, there is a code of conduct and at Sri Lanka Cricket, we have very strict rules and regulations since the days we have been playing. The national team represents the elite athletes in this country and they are professionals. Past is past, unfortunately some things happened in recent times but my job is to make sure we adhere to those rules. No one is above the law and the game is above everyone. “ Senanayake told ThePapare.com
