The ICC today confirmed in a tweet that Sri Lanka Test captain Dinesh Chandimal has appealed against the ball-tampering charge laid on him, which handed him a suspension of one Test and a 100% fine of his match fee.

Reports emerged that Sri Lanka Cricket officials were in discussion with the Sri Lankan side that is currently in Barbados and late Wednesday night made a decision to contest the charge.

The ICC will now appoint a Judicial Commissioner to conduct an independent hearing on this appeal. The ICC will also announce a date for this hearing which is unlikely to be a date before the beginning of the 3rd Test which is to begin on the 23rd of June.

This appeal also means that the one-Test ban imposed on Dinesh Chandimal will be cleared until the independent hearing is conducted. The verdict of the hearing will decide Chandimal’s eligibility to play in Sri Lanka’s next match.

If the hearing doesn’t happen before the beginning of the 3rd Test in Barbados, which is the most likely scenario, Dinesh Chandimal will be allowed to play the 3rd Test.
