Former Sri Lankan fast bowler and bowling coach Chaminda Vaas has been named head coach of the Dhaka Dominators franchise ahead of the 9th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.

Vaas is the first and only Sri Lankan fast bowler to take 400 wickets in ODI cricket and over 300 wickets in Test cricket. With his 400 scalps in the 50 over game, he is still the fourth highest wicket taker in the format’s history.

Vaas began his coaching career working with New Zealand in 2012 when they toured Sri Lanka. After that he had a short stint as the bowling coach of Ireland and then a two-year run as the bowling coach of Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015. In 2017 he had another stint as the Sri Lankan bowling coach. In February 2021, Vaas was reappointed as the Sri Lankan fast bowling coach replacing David Saker but resigned shortly after.

The Dhaka Dominators franchise began their BPL journey as Dhaka Gladiators in the inaugural season of the tournament and won both the first two editions before it was disbanded ahead of the 3rd season. There have been 4 different owners for this franchise since then before Rupa Fabrics Limited acquired the ownership of the franchise for the 2023 season just last month. The franchise was last known as Minister Dhaka.

The 9th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League is set to take place from the 5th of January to 16th of February next year.
