Cavalry Supercross, the 7th edition of the annual motor sporting spectacle organized by the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers And Riders (SLARDAR) will be held on the 02nd of July 2017 at the Cavalry Supercross race track in Pangolla, Kurunegala.
A brain child of Brig. Indunil Ranasinghe of the Sri Lanka Armored Corps, Cavalry Supercross first graced the Sri Lankan motor sports circuits in the year 2010 and is primarily a fund raising project with a focus on providing improvements to welfare facilities that are made available for the immediate families of Officers and men killed or maimed in battle.
This year the organizers are expecting a large number of foreign riders to take part in the competition and have been endorsed by Japanese rider F. Utahara and former British racing champion Mark Higines who have supplied their expertise on ways of improving the quality and the standards of the racing track.
Last year at the 6th edition both Ishan Dassanayake and Ushan Perera were crowned Champion rider and driver respectively for the first time. Both of them will have a hard run this time to retain the titles as the other competitors will be determined to snatch the crown away from them.
Dassanayake had success at the all-important Foxhill Supercross but was unfortunate not to finish the Vijayabahu motocross due to a crash. He also did not participate in the inaugural Colombo Supercross due to the injury he suffered at Boyaganey. Ishan however has gotten back to his riding rhythm as he participated in the FIM Asian Championship in Philippines and was placed 6th overall in the competition and will be eager to get back to form back in the island.
It will be a very crucial race for Ushan Perera, the current national gravel racing champion, as he has had a troubled start to the season. At the Foxhill Supercross Ushan was seen struggling with a mechanical difficulty in his automobile. Unfortunately for Ushan he was unable to rectify the shortcomings of the automobile at the Colombo Supercross as well and could not complete the race. He will be focused on a comeback in order to keep his title hopes alive at the end of the year.
Cavalry Supercross will be the fourth of the six raced “Sri Lanka Super Series 2017” which features the Island’s finest riders and drivers in action. This year the Champion driver of the said series will be presented with a KIA Picanto while the Champion rider will receive a Honda CB Hornet 160cc motorbike.
