Trinity College beat St Peter’s by 173 runs in the quarter finals of the U19 Limited over tournament at Katunayake today.
These two teams met at the quarter finals of the two day tournament this year and it was Peter’s who came on top after a dominating performance with the bat on their first innings. Trinity after a brilliant victory at their big match against St Anthony’s College last week, showed signs of dominance which they have displayed recently.
The toss was won by Trinity College and they elected to bat first. The openers gave them the ideal foundation with a 64 run stand for the first wicket. Nushan Weerasinghe scored 60 before he was unfortunately run out by Chathura Obeysekara. The boys from Kandy took the game away from Peters through the 4th wicket partnership between Dilan Jayalath and Hasitha Boyagoda. Pair put up 167 runs for the 4th wicket in just 108 balls. Dilan Jayalath top scored with a scintillating 129 off just 82 balls with 7 maximums and 11 boundaries. On the other end Hasitha scored a valuable off 70 runs off 59 balls with 3 sixes and 5 fours. Peterite skipper Vinu Mohotty couldn’t stop the onslaught as Trinity College posted a mammoth 327 in 50 overs. Taneesha Weerakoon managed to take two scalps but he leaked away too many runs. Sadish Pathiranage and Chathura Obeysekara were the only two bowlers who were able to contain the run flow.
The Peterites came on to bat with a daunting task ahead of them. They certainly had the fire power in the tank but the pressure of chasing a mammoth total affected their decision making on the field. They lost too many wickets up front and they could not put together any partnerships throughout the innings. In form batsman Hashan Wanasekara was sent back to the pavilion for a duck and their highest run scorer Lakshina Rodrigo could only score 20 runs before he got out. There was some fight back from the lower middle order. Skipper Vinu Mohotty top scored with 42 runs while Ranmith Jayasena scored 35 runs. Ultimately St Peter’s were bowled out for just 154 in 47.1 overs. Ravin Sayer took 3 wickets for 21 runs while Lahiru Kumara took 3 scalps for just 29 runs. Trinity College cruised their way to semi final with a 173 run victory against St Peter’s. They will be playing against Nalanda College in the semis and from the way Trinity are playing they will surely be favorites to win the title.
