Carlton sports club managed to win the interclub 7’s tournament which was organized by the Western Province rugby football union yesterday.
The tournament which was organized by the Western Province rugby football union was played for the Asian Finance trophy and the matches were carried out at the Royal College sports complex.
Carlton Sports Club managed to defend the Cup Championship of the WPRFU Open Inter-club Rugby Sevens after they beat the Havelock’s Bambara’s in the finals 19 points (two goals, one try) to 14 (two goals) last year.
The tournament featured 24 teams with 8 playing in the Cup/Plate category and 16 turning out for the Bowl and Shield.
The winners continued their unbeaten run from day one registering a convincing 31 nil win over Army ‘B’ in the cup semi finals. Air Force ‘A’ the other team that impressed during day one went on to beat Army ‘B’ 19-5 in the other Cup semi finals to set up the finals.
The stage was set for a big final with the two unbeaten teams of the tournament going against each other. Carlton SC featured a number of National sevens stars including Sajith Saranga, Saliya Handapangoda and Chua Susantha. Air Force on the other hand played with a lot of their experienced campaigners and dished out some gutty rugby to take the game to the defending champions. It was a close tussle with Carlton edging out their opponents scoring a goal and two tries while Air Force replied with 2 goals to finish the game 17-14 in favour of Carlton SC.
Navy ‘Gamunu’ managed to win the Plate segment after beating Petersons SC in the final 24 points to nil. The bowl final was won by Kalani Valley who beat Jawatte Lions during Extra time while Amana won the Shiled beating Siyane 14 points to 5.
