Nathan Lyon was responsible for a stoppage in play on day three of New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield encounter against Queensland at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Wednesday (15 November). The fire alarm went off in the Stuart Law grandstand, where the dressing rooms of both the teams were located.
The play was stopped and Tea was taken with the visitors needing just 18 runs for the victory. However, the players weren’t allowed into the dressing rooms, which created a chaotic environment. Lyon later confessed to have been responsible for inadvertently triggering the alarm to go off while toasting his bread.
“(The toast) popped up first and I wasn’t happy so I put it back down and I got carried away watching the cricket,” Lyon was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. “There’s a first for everything,” said Lyon.
“I was getting a bit bored in the changerooms.”
Two fire trucks were brought into the ground and Lyon saw the funnier side of it. “Steve Smith already said he’s going to cover it (the fire truck call-out fee),” he quipped.
After the strange event, Kurtis Patterson and Daniel Hughes returned and completed NSW’s six-wicket victory.
