Bronze for Gomas, Sri Lanka’s second at CWG 2018

Weightlifter Dinusha Hansani Gomas won Bronze in the Women’s 48Kg weight category at the 21st Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia a short while ago.

Gomas, who competed in the 48Kg weight category, did the nation proud clearing a total weight of 155Kg. In the Snatch Gomas achieved her best lift of 70kg in her second lift before attempting to lift 74Kg unsuccessfully while in the Clean and Jerk her best came in her first attempt with an 85kg lift as she failed to complete the two 90Kg lifts that she attempted next.

Indian Chanu Saikhom Mirbai won Gold at the competition lifting an astonishing 196Kg in total, laying claim to the Commonwealth Record and the Games Record for the highest total. Her Snatch (86Kg) and Clean and Jerk (110Kg) were also Commonwealth and Games records. Mauritian, Marie Ranivosoa clinched the Silver managing lifting a total of 170Kg.

Earlier in the day, Chathuranga Lakmal won Sri Lanka’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games clinching the Bronze medal in the Men’s 56Kg weight category

Sri Lankan weightlifters have had a very satisfying day at the competition so far with two medals in the two events that they participated in and will be hoping that the momentum will continue when Thilanka Palangasinghe takes to the lifting arena to compete in the Men’s 62Kg category.
