Six national men’s and six women’s teams are expected to fight for honours in the inaugural Borneo 7s 2015 

 

Six national men’s and six women’s teams are expected to fight for honours in the inaugural Borneo 7s 2015 – Asia Pacific Cross-regional 7’s tournament which is set to take place at the Eagles Sports Arena, Eagles Rugby Club (ERC) in Sandakan from Jan 27- March 1.

Asia will be represented by Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, China, Japan and they may face strong challenge from Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Cook Island from the Oceania region.

The tournament with a total cash prize of US$39,200 is organised by Eagles Rugby Club, Sandakan and organising chairman Velayuthan Tan said on Thursday during the official launch of the event that a total of 34 teams from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, China, Tonga, Samoa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Cook Island and Malaysia will be taking part in the three-day meet.

He said defending champions Daveta from Fiji will return and are aiming for hat-trick win in the competition.

“Sabah will be represented by our elite local players from the Sabah Eagles as well as hosts ERC Borneo Eagles.

“And we have also not forgotten that there will be an Under-16 boys’ event for our youngsters who will be the future flag bearers of the sport here in Sabah.
