The 18th LC-BC Shield Hockey encounter saw one of the most memorable games in the history of the Ladies’ College vs. Bishop’s College fixtures. Bhagya Fernando’s heroics sealed the deal for the girls from Boyd Place as they outsmarted their opponents from Flower Road, winning 3-0 to claim the silverware at Police Park Grounds.

Bhagya Fernando was the star of the match, with her hat-trick leaving the LC defense bamboozled, while the BC supporters were on cloud nine. Amaani Imran captained the LC team, and Nethra Mukesh Shanker led the victorious Bishop’s College team.

With this year’s victory, Bishop’s College has secured 7 wins in the series, with Ladies’ College leading the tally with 9 wins. Three encounters have ended in draws.

Under-17: The game saw an intense battle that ended in a 0-0 draw.

Special Awards bagged by Bishopians:

The chief guest this year was Rosemary Illangakoon, a multi-sport personality and past pupil of Ladies’ College, who represented her alma mater in netball, athletics, and hockey (Vice Captain – 2007).

Notably, there were two pairs of sisters playing for BC this year: Esther and Hannah Daniel, and Anika and Maika Tennekoon (incidentally, granddaughters of former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Anura Tennekoon—Sri Lanka’s first ODI captain, who led the 1975 and 1979 World Cup teams).

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s hockey enthusiasts, players, coaches, and parents eagerly await the sport to blossom again after the completion of newly re-laid astro turfs in Colombo and Matale. The players are hopeful that they will be able to play big tournaments in a safer and more secure environment, compared to the previously dangerous conditions of both turfs.

Veterans of the game are also pointing out that it is high time new astro turfs were built in Kandy, Galle, and Wennappuwa, areas where the sport is played with great passion. This, they believe, will help elevate the game further.
