Lyceum International School –Wattala leads with 599 points as the 2nd day of the Inter International Athletic Championship comes to its final day.

The start of second day was more competitive than whole of the events of the first day put together. The meet was heading towards senior contestants and final rounds. The first event, Under 17 boys’ high jump was in favor for the organizers – Gateway College – as N M P Udantha Bandara was able to set up a new meet record of 1.96 meters. However, Lyceum wattala, the opposing atheletic giant, didn’t leave much space as they produced another meet record for Under 15 boy’s high jump. It is Waruna Attanayake who holds the new record of 1.70m.

The schedule was moving smoothly from Long jump to Shot put and Javelin Throw until 110m hurdles took an interesting turn. As commonly seen in hurdle events there were participants who were falling behind as they made through; nevertheless, the support from the audience kept the hype of the event up.

The older contestants of the meet were taking part in these finals bringing tough victories to their respective colleges. The time difference between the champion of Under 20 boy’s hurdles, Umair Zoumy, and the 1st runners up, Insath Nawas, is just under 0.37 seconds. The audience also saw a closer finish between the 1st runners up and the 2nd of an inconceivable 0.12 seconds.

As the proceedings moved on to the lunch break it was a rather monotonous hour of ten back to back 4 x 100m relay events: Under 13 girls’/boys’, Under 15 girls’/boys’Under 17 girls’/boys’Under 19 girls’/ boys’and Under 20 girls’/boys’. The rest of the day moreover included of events which were missed from the first day: Under 09 girl’s long jump. But the 1500m events and the 4 x 400m relay events marked a good ending for the second day.

Concluding victories of the second day went to Kusal Kaluarachchi of Colomobo International for Under 20 boys’ 1500m and Thivaedee Narayana of Asian International School for Under 20 Girls’ 1500m. We can expect much action on the last day with the most exciting 100m finals for senior age categories plus invited relay events.

On a last note, Gateway College is under much pressure with over 100 points behind the Lyceum International School Wattala facing the final day of Inter International Athletic Championships. However if there was a competition on how great an organizing team can be, Gateway college sure have proved to be outstanding.
