The 5th encounter of the Youth 50 over tri series in UAE worked off at the Tolerance Oval stadium in Abu Dhabi between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This was a must win encounter for Bangladesh to stay alive in the tournament.
Sri Lanka youth skipper Shevon Daniel who won the toss, decided to bat first hoping to put the opponents under pressure with a sizable target. But Sri Lankans suffered an early setback as all their top 5 of their top 6 batters were back in the pavilion inside the first 12 overs. Dinura Kalupahana and Hiran Jayasundara brought in some stability to the Lion Cubs inning as they managed to put together 59 runs for the 6th wicket. But both Kalupahana (49) and Jayasundara (35) got out in a space of 20 deliveries as Lankans were once again pushed into a corner.
But Malsha Tharupathi who was demoted down the order to number 9 counter-attacked with the help of Vishwa Rajapakse as 44 runs were added for the 8th wicket before Rajapakse got out for 25. Tharupathi continued to bat with an aggressive intent but went for one shot too many as he also departed for a quickfire 46 from just 37 balls.
With 2 overs left in the tank, Sri Lanka Under 19 were bowled out for 215, giving Bangladesh under 19 a below par chase at the Tolerance Oval to keep their hopes of making it to the finals in the triangular tournament.

For Bangladesh it was their two main pacers, Mohommad Borson and Maruf Mridha who troubled Sri Lanka a lot taking 3 wickets each. Borson with his right arm medium pace took all of his 3 wickets with the new ball while Mridha the left arm pacer struck with the new ball and older ball as well. Tanvir Ahammed also chipped in with 2 wickets for the Tigers.
Bangladesh’s quest to chase down 216 began in style as opening batter Jishan Alam came out all guns blazing to put the Sri Lankan bowlers under pressure. The right handed batter made 62 off 32 deliveries striking it just below 200 with 6 fours and 4 sixes. Out of the 66 runs scored for the opening wicket of Bangladesh, Alam contributed a staggering 93.93%.
Kalupahana managed to remove the dangerous Alam but Sri Lanka never really got the opportunity to recover from that early onslaught by Alam as rest of the Bangladeshi batters took them over the line by batting sensibly. Ahrar Almin the skipper was unbeaten on 44 off 80 balls when they reached the target with 5 wickets and 13 balls to spare.
Sri Lankan bowlers didn’t have a good outing as only 2 of their bowlers managed to make it into the wickets column. Kalupahana the pick of the bowlers took 2 wickets for 41 for Sri Lanka while Duvindu Ranatunga took 1 for 44.
With this result, Sri Lanka now need to win their next encounter against Afghanistan to qualify for the finals of the tri series. The all important final round-robin game will take place on the 28th of March at the Tolerance Oval.
