The series which is a part of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship was originally scheduled to commence in July 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic to October.

After many discussions between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Bangladesh Cricket board (BCB) regarding the period of quarantine for the players and the staff, both parties could not land on a solution to which Sri Lankan health authorities would agree to.

Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 task force has reportedly not relaxed their stand on the 14 days of quarantine which is a must for anyone arriving in Sri Lanka. The BCB requested that the quarantine period be reduced and alongside SLC tried to compromise via suggestions such as a split quarantine between the countries, shorter quarantine periods etc, to no avail.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan said to ESPN Cricinfo, “Any tourist who is entering Sri Lanka has to abide by this rule of 14 days in quarantine, SLC have told us that they couldn’t do anything about this point about quarantine. We have informed them that we have to reschedule the tour to a time when things will improve”

Previously, Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva also said that SLC are exploring the option of rescheduling this tour during the same cycle next year or the following year.
