Sri Lanka thump Bangladesh after Wanindu all-round effort
Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka and Sandun Weerakkody, got off to a reasonable start making 30 off 5 overs, but Wicket keeper batsman Weerakkody soon dismissed for 7 runs. Then, Nissanka and skipper Asalanka joined in the middle for a run-a-ball 66 run partnership taking Sri Lanka past 100.
Asalanka who made a stroke-full 71 in the last innings, fell short of a well-deserved half century by 5 runs, being trapped in front off Shafiqul Islam’s left arm medium pace. Nissanka went on to score 55 runs including 8 boundaries, but he too fell, letting the middle order to take all the responsibility of setting a good target.
Fortunately, ambidextrous all-rounder Kamindu Mendis rose up to the occasion and posed a timely knock of 65 to solidify the middle order and propelled SL-E past 200 mark. Fast bowling all-rounder Jehan Daniel’s late contribution with the bat (43 off 41) helped SL-E to set a target of 273 which was a competitive score in Savar pitch.
In the Bangladesh run chase, Sri Lanka Emerging tasted early success, running out Bangladesh Emerging opener Mohammad Naim in the 3rd over, but from there on, the Bangladesh batters took the control in to their hands and started to find boundaries.
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto who has already played Test cricket, constructed a match winning partnership of 120 runs with 23-years old Yasir Ali. The pair produced the perfect platform, making 77 and 85 respectively, before being dismissed later in the innings.
After the departure of those set batsmen, Sri Lanka made major strides to affect a mini collapse in host’s middle order dismissing 4 batsmen in no time as the required run rate crept high. Shiran Fernando and Jehan Daniel shared two wickets each.
Ultimately, Bangladesh needed 12 off the 50th over which was bowled by Jehan Daniel to the striker Yeasin Arafat and they reached the target in just 3 balls, dispatching Daniel for 2 sixes to tie the one-day series 1-1
The deciding 3rd one-day match will be held at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, Khulna on 24th August.
