Ban looms for Rankothge

The disciplinary committee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) has decided to take strict action against A division rugby referee Aruna Rankothge following an incident which had occurred during the ongoing Dialog Rugby League  between CR and FC and Navy last month at Longden Place.

The three-member disciplinary committee headed by Ibrahim Hameed has recommended a ban to be imposed on Rankothge for rest of the on-going inter-club rugby season.

The committee has also decided not to change the result of the game won by the Navy SC 31-27.

Aruna Rankothge made the huge mistake during the game by blowing for a knock-on and then allowing for the scoring of a try by the Sailors.

According to the laws of the game when a referee blows his whistle, the ball becomes dead and the question arises as to how the referee had allowed a team to score a try with a dead ball.

Rankothge speaking to Ceylon today said he was not averse to any action being taken by the Union against him. “We are human beings, but I don’t want to regret it because it was my mistake,” Rankothge said.

The disciplinary committee has already handed over their recommended decision on Rankothge to the SLRFU and the council is to take a final decision on the matter shortly.
