The 4th Asian Youth Para Games concluded in Manama, Bahrain after 7 days of intense competition, with Team Sri Lanka winning 12 medals in Athletics and swimming.
The Bahrain Games saw 30 nations participating eagerly, after the deathly Covid-19 pandemic halted sports globally for over a year. The Bahrain International circuit served as the main venue for the Games.
Undoubtedly the top performer for Sri Lanka this year was young Galina Basnayake who claimed 3 Gold medals along with a Silver.
Hailing from Lyceum International, Galina Basnayake won Gold in the S6-10 400m Freestyle (5:25.27min), 100m Freestyle (1:12.09min), 50m Freestyle and a Silver in the S6-10 100m Butterfly (1:32.86min).
The only other gold medal came from Safran Mohommadu in the M U17 Long Jump event with a leap of 5.60m. He also managed another Silver in the M U17 100m event.
Jason Jayawardana won 2 Silver medals in the field events, Shot Put with 6.64m and the other in the Discus throw.
Janani Wickramasinghe added 3 bronze medals to the tally in the Track and field events; 200m with a time of 29.36sec, 100m and in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.38m.
Naveed Raheem capped the tally with a Bronze in the 400m Freestyle event.
Sri Lankan swimming legend, Julian Bolling coached the two swim teams in Bahrain while Nalinda Senarath joined the tour as the Athletics coach. The Chef de Mission for the tour was Priyantha Peiris who is also one of the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Paralympic committee.
