Asia Sevens Series final showdown in Colombo

The final leg of the Asia Sevens Series will be held in Sri Lanka in the capital city Colombo, turning a new chapter in the country’s rugby.

For the first time, Sri Lanka will play hosts to the grand finale of the Asia Sevens Series that will kick off at the Racecourse Complex on the 10th and 11th of October 2015. It will also the first occasion where Sri Lanka hosts an international tournament of this magnitude where 11 nations are expected to make the trip to the island for the final segment that will decide who would walk away with the silverware for the cup, plate, bowl and shield.

Rugby fans in the country will get the opportunity to go through the international sevens experience at Racecourse as they would flood the stadium in support of the Lankan Tuskers. There will come no better opportunity than this for the Tuskers to showcase their true potent playing amidst thousands of fans cheering passionately for them.  

 It will also be an adrenaline rush for skipper Fazil Marija and his men playing in front of their very own fans; something that they have never experienced in the sevens journey.

The Asian spectacle, the Dialog Sri Lanka Rugby sevens will be empowered by national Rugby’s sponsor Dialog Axiata and will be broadcast to over 11 countries internationally.

The Asia Sevens series is an annual sevens title spearheaded by the Asia Rugby Football Union where the best of Asia battle it out for the title in the shorter version of the game. Held in three legs, the sevens tournament includes both categories of men and women. A total of 12 nations including Sri Lanka will participate in this celebrated sevens series. Last year’s tournament saw Sri Lanka finally ending up as Plate champions in the final leg that was held in Bangkok.

 The first leg of this year’s championship was successfully worked off at Qingdao China where the giants of Asia; Japan emerged victorious defeating the hosts China 28-12. Sri Lanka reached the semifinals with a perfect opportunity to reach a cup final but was later defeated by the Chinese 12-22. Sri Lanka finished fourth in the tournament losing out to Hong Kong in the third place game.

The second leg of the tournament is expected to kick off during the weekend 26th & 27th September at SCG Muang Thong stadium in Bangkok. The Sri Lankan team will be facing the heavyweights Hong Kong and the Chinese Taipei in the opening day and will later progress on to the knock out stage on day two.
