Ashain Daniel and Dunith Wellalage spin WP Central to victory

Two matches of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) U19 Provincial Limited Overs Tournament 2018 were concluded today at Katunayake and Colombo.

Uva Province vs Western Province Central

Group B fixture between Western Province Central and Uva Province was worked off today at Colts Cricket Ground in Colombo. Excellent bowling performance from two Josephians, Ashain Daniel and Dunth Wellalage was the highlight of the match as they bamboozled Uva Province batsmen with their spin tricks.

After been put into bat first, Uva Province innings was restricted to just 83 runs in 40.1 overs. Off spinner Ashain Daniel and left arm spinner Dunith Wellalage picked up 3 wickets each for Western Province Central. Chasing 84 runs to win, Western Province Central batsmen were in a hurry as they chased down the target within 11.1 overs and 8 wickets to spare.

Sithara Hapuhinna, a product of S. Thomas College bashed quick-fire 39 to provide Western Province Central the second consecutive win in the tournament.

Western Province South vs Southern Province

Group B fixture between Southern Province and Western Province South concluded today at Chilaw Marians CC Ground in Katunayake. Due to the prevailing weather conditions, umpires decided to reduce the overs and hold a 37-over contest.

Southern Province skipper won the toss and had no hesitation to bowl first under overcast conditions. They could restrict the strong batting line up of Western Province South to 151 runs. Right handed batsman Janishka Perera, a product of St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa top scored with 57 runs for Western Province South.

In the bowing department, Richmondite Ravishka Wijesiri was the pick of the bowlers as he grabbed 3 wickets for 31 runs while Nipun Malinga and Sandun Mendis picked up 2 wickets a piece for Southern Province. Lads from Southern Province chased down the target in the last over of the match with only 2 wickets to spare.

Top order batsman Navod Paranavithana (42) and Sandun Mendis (41) guided Southern Province to victory. 16-year old right arm off spin bowler Avishka Lakshan, a product of Kalutara Vidyalaya did his very best with the ball to prevent the loss for Western Province South claiming 6 wickets for 19 runs but his efforts went in vain.
