Sri Lanka disappoint against Sierra Leone

Sri Lanka suffered a 2-0 loss against Sierra Leone in their final pool B encounter in Men’s Beach Volleyball at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games played at Coolangatta Beach.

World rank 14th, Samuel Pedlow and Sam Schachter of Canada..

Sri Lanka’s Asanka Pradeep & Malintha Yapa needed to win the game against Sierra Leone’s Patrick Lombi & Abubakar Kamara to have any hope of making it to the quarter finals as they had lost to Scotland and Canada earlier. A win against Sierra Leone would have sent the pair into the quarter final as one of the best third place finishers.

Lombi & Kamara took a 3-point lead at 10-7 in the 1st set before Sri Lanka managed to equalize at 12-12 and then take a one-point lead of their own. But, the Sierra Leone pair wrested back the lead at 16-15 and raced away to win the 1st set 21-17.

The 2nd set saw Asanka and Yapa scoring first and taking an 8-12 lead only to see the opponents go on a 4-0 run to equalize 12 all. Again, Sri Lanka took a 3-pont lead but Lombi & Kamara fought back to make it 20 all. For the first time in the 2nd set the Sierra Leone pair took the lead and sealed the set and the match in 42 minutes at 22-20.

Sri Lanka fell agonizingly short of defeating Scotland..

The two 21-year olds from  Sierra Leone are ranked 365th in the world while the Sri Lankan pair are 176th. However, Lombi & Kamara had impressed in their earlier games especially against Canada who were world rank 14th. They lost 22-20 & 21-14 to the Canadian pair while the Sri Lankans could only manage a 21-11 & 21-5 loss against the same.
