Army wins Women’s Championship in a thrilling penalty shootout

Sri Lanka Army prevailed in a heart stopping penalty shootout to lift the Cargills Women’s Club Championship beating Sri Lanka Navy 8-7 after a goalless 90 minutes.

Both teams played some entertaining soccer but the forwards could not find the net and the goal keepers played a good game for both teams.

Army goalkeeper Ayomi Wijerathna was the hero as she saved Navy’s eighth penalty sending the players into ecstasy.

Army women booked their place in the final defeating Leo Women SC 4-2 and Navy women won a close 2-1 against Police SC in their semi final. 

Army goalkeeper Ayomi Wijerathna was adjudged the best goalkeeper while Praveena Maduki received the award for the best player.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka conducted the above Women Club Championship and 

Twenty Four (24) Women Football Teams were participated in this tournament in 4 Zones. 

In the third place match Leo women defeated Police SC.
