Air Force SC and Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) defeated Army SC to become champions in the Super League at the 10th Munchee National Volleyball Championship 2017 at the National Youth Service Council Indoor Stadium.
Ports pull the plug on CEB; Air Force dominate Casual Line to win Championships
Sri Lanka Ports Authority avenged their group stage loss as they came from a set down to defeat favourites Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) 20-25, 25-17, 25-21 & 25-19 and win the Munchee National Volleyball Super League Men’s Championship for the 4th straight year.

Air Force SC came from a set down to defeat Army SC 21-25, 25-18, 35-33 & 25-15 to retain the championship.

Air Force did the same in the semi-final to win 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 & 25-20 against MAS Casualline – in a repeat of last year’s final while Army defeated Sri Lanka Ports Authority 25-23, 25-21 & 25-16 in their semi-final.
The defending champions, showing their intentions raced to an early 8-2 lead in the final. Playing in the National Championship final for the first time, Army took their time in settling into the game. They made it a 2-point game at 12-10 but again let the lead grow to 15-10. Therein, Army made a brilliant comeback to equalize at 16-16 and went on a 6-0 run to lead 17-23. Air Force closed in at 20-23 but Army eventually won the 1st set 21-25.
Air Force SC v MAS Casualline – Semi Final (Women’s Super League)

It was a neck-n-neck 2nd set but halfway through the set Air Force fashioned a 17-12 lead and extended it to win 25-18.
The 3rd set turned out to be a scintillating set as neither side let the other take a significant lead. Army led 16-17 at one point but a burst of energy saw Air Force lead 22-18. Army fought back to equalize 22-22. From there on in it was a nail biting point for point as it went until 33-33. Air Force ultimately tipped Army to win the energy sapping and morale boosting set 35-33.

The 4th set seemed to have taken a lot out of the Army side, mentally and physically, as they let the game slip away to give Air Force a 19-10 lead. Air Force went onto crush their opponents 25-15 to win the championship.

Ceylon Electricity Board v Army SC – Men’s Super League Final
Last year’s runner-up CEB, left no room for mistakes as they controlled the final expertly to win 25-21, 25-17 & 25-20.

Army came from a set down to win 23-25, 25-20, 25-23 & 25-20 against Air Force SC in the 1st semi-final and in the other semi-final, CEB outclassed Sri Lanka Ports Authority 29-27, 25-20 & 25-21 avenging their loss in last year’s final.

Both sides started off the final in frantic fashion. Neither side was able to take a 2-point lead as the scores read 17 all heading into the business stage of the 1st set. The CEB tactics earned dividends when it mattered as they moved ahead to win the set 25-21.
CEB upped their game in the 2nd set leading 8-3, 14-7, 17-11 & 20-12 at different stages of the set. They went onto comfortably take a 2-0 lead winning the 2nd set 25-17.

Army desperately needed to win the 3rd set to be alive in the championship but CEB were ruthless, not letting the momentum switch. Army managed to equalize at 3-3 early in the 3rd set, which was the only time they managed to come close. CEB gradually built up a lead, demoralizing the soldiers.
At 20-14 when the match seemed lost, Army rallied for one last assault and brought the score to 22-18. However, it was all they had as CEB defused the threat to win the set and the championship 25-20.
