The ABA Men & women Intermediate boxing Meet Tournament came to a successful conclusion on July 21st at the Nawalapitiya Jayathilake Indoor stadium, after five days of intense combats of young pugilists.
162 young men and 58 young women boxers from 22 different clubs competed in the arena for victory with enormous energy and enthusiasm. Intimidating combats were witnessed this year where the Armed Forces and Police dominated the boxing arena exhibiting raw talent and adding value to the Sri Lankan boxing.
The Sri Lankan Army dominated the tournament stealing 7 bouts out of 10 weight categories, whilst Sri Lanka Air force won two bouts whilst the Navy team won a single bout only. The 4 women categories were won by MAS Unichela Boxing Club and Slimline, Silueta, Sri Lanka Police, Linea Clothing, Thurulie and Army boxing clubs respectively won single bouts each.
Highlighted as a gutty performer N B A J Vimukthi Kumara of Sri Lanka Army was titled the men’s best boxer and I P D C Udayakumara of Sri Lanka Air force as the best looser of the tournament. Representing the women’s medal stand, G K Wasana of MAS Thurulie Boxing club, with exceptional techniques and swift foot works, delivered a series of well-coordinated punches and secured her title as the best boxer whilst D M N K Chandrarathne of the Police boxing club was awarded the best looser title.
Lt Col Hemantha Weerasinghe, an International Technical Official, former Secretary of the Boxing association of Sri Lanka and the most renowned former fly weight champions in Sri Lankan boxing graced the event as the Chief Guest.
