Himasha, Chaturanga thrash Northern Warriors

Himasha Liyanage and Chaturanga de Silva's star performances bring Eastern Warriors their first victory of the tournament

The 2nd day of the Army Commanders League was worked out today with at Dombagoda Sri Lanka Army Ordinance Corps Ground, as the Eastern Warriors and Western Warriors managed to win their respective matches.

Northern Warriors Skipper Seekkuge Prasanna won the toss and invited Asela Gunaratne-led Eastern Warriors to bat first.

Eastern Warriors opener Sandun Weerakkody, who scored a half-century in the last game, could not provide the same impact this time as he failed for just six runs. However, Skipper Asela Gunaratne and 24-year-old Himasha Liyanage played beautifully to take their total to 189. South paw Liyanage impressed with a whirlwind 74 off just 37 balls, which included 4 sixes.

The reply innings never got going as the Northern Warriors would have liked them to. Only double figures were scored by Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, but even that was not enough to help them escape the embarrassment of a defeat by 91 runs.

Southern Warriors Skipper Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and decided to bat first against Thisara Perera-led Western Warriors.

Chandimal’s Southern Warriors used the batting powerplay perfectly as they compiled 54 runs in the first 6 overs, thanks to the Skipper Chandimal’s blistering 66 off 43 balls. However, other players could not cope up with the Western Warriors bowling attack as they were bundled out for 136 without even completing the 20 overs. Chinaman Sachin Thillakaratne troubled Southerners throughout his spell with figures of 3 for 19.

Chasing a total of 137, National team opener Avishka Fernando gave the impetus needed for Westerners at the top with a marvelous knock of 57. Western Warriors were in a spot of trouble when they needed 16 off the last two overs, but the Skipper Perera blasted two sixes to guide them home and register their first win of the tournament.
