Anusha, Nilmini and Shiromala to fight at World’s Boxing C’ships

Sri Lanka will be proudly featuring its women boxing heavyweights AnushaKodituwakku, NilminiJayasinghe and ShiromaliWeeraratne, at the upcoming Women’s World Boxing Championships in Qinhauangdao, China. 

The 7th edition of the Women’s World Boxing Championships scheduled from May 9th – 20th, 2012, organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) will feature women pugilists around the world. The event will also serve as a qualifying event for the London Olympics in August. 

Female pugilists in the age groups between 17-34 years and in the weight categories of 45kg (Fly weight) up to 81+kg (Super Heavy Weight) from all over the world, participate for the coveted titles. London 2012 Olympics will set the platform for the female boxers, to battle it out for titles across the weight categories of 48-51kg, 57-60kg and 69-75kg in the Olympic history, with 24 quotas (eight in each weight category) are in place for grabs. 

Sri Lanka’s Anusha Kodituwakku will be fighting in the 51kg weight category while Nilmini Jayasinghe and Shiromali Weeraratne would be fighting in the 60kg and 75 kg weight categories, respectively. The Team will be accompanied by Coach, Anuruddha Ratnayake a former Boxer who participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Pujith Mendis, IP of Sri Lanka Police who coached Shiromali Weerarathna to become a bronze medalist at the Asian Women Boxing Championships 2012.The Manager accompanying the Team will be Ruwan Keragala, the current Treasurer of the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) of Sri Lanka.

According to the Secretary of the ABA, Mahesh Dahanayake, the Sri Lankan Contingent is currently participating in preliminary training sessions with the Thailand National Team, until May 7th, ahead of the world Championships.
