Angelo Mathews becomes leading ODI run-scorer in 2014

Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews continued his tremendous form with the bat on Thursday by scoring an unbeaten 92 off 101 deliveries against India in the second ODI of the ongoing 5-match ODI series.

Mathews walked in to bat in the 13th over, with the score reading 3/64, and formed a competitive 90-run partnership with Kumar Sangakkara.

But Sangakkara’s wicket after making 61 valuable runs brought an end to what looked like being a match-winning partnership, and also resulted in a steady fall of Sri Lankan wickets. Mathews, however, was undeterred by the lack of support and carried his bat through till the end to take the Lankans to 274/8 from 50 overs.

By doing so, Mathews has overtaken Sangakkara himself as the leading run-scorer in ODI cricket for the year of 2014, with 838 runs from 22 matches at a brilliant average of 64.46.
