Ananda defeat Joes after 81 years

Ananda College Skipper Sammu Ashan led his team to a resounding and historic win over St. Joseph’s College when they beat the hosts by an innings and 7 runs at Darley Road on Saturday. Incidentally this was the first outright win for Anandians against the Josephians after 81 long years. 

Batting first, Ananda posted a mammoth 301 for 9 declared as Nisal Francisco top scored for the visitors with a patient knock of 91. Nipun Haggalle (61) and Sammu Ashan (58) cracked half-tons. Left-arm spinner Malshan Rodrigo claimed 5 wickets for the hosts. 

Joes in their first innings failed to put up a substantial score as they were bowled out for 170. Left-handed vice-captain Hashindra Perera played a fine fighting knock of 54 while skipper Pathum Madusanka made 34 runs. Sammu Ashan took 5 wickets with his off-spinners while Dilanka Sandaken grabbed 3 scalps. 

After being asked to follow on, St. Joseph’s once again failed with the bat as Ananda closed down the victory with ease. Vimukthi Peiris made 47 for the hosts with Nipun Sumanasinghe chipping in with 30 runs. Sammu Ashan completed 9 wickets for his match bag of wickets.
