After Hansaja Jayasinghe’s valiant effort with the bat, Ananda College managed to hold on to a thrilling draw in the 91st battle of the Maroons which was played at the SSC Grounds, Colombo on 7th & 8th March.
Nalanda sniffs a victory after Raveen and Rashan’s heroics
Raveen de Silva and Rashan Dissanayake’s unbeaten 159 partnership propelled Nalanda College……
Nalandians were riding high after the five scalps they made on the day 1 of the Ananda College who were responding to a mammoth 1st innings score of Nalanda’s 307. Ananda College’s overnight batsmen Nethma Karunaratne and Janindu Jayawardene started their batting essay on day 02, on 79/5 trailing by 228 runs.
With another 21 runs added to the total, Jayawardene had to depart off Anudha Jithwara’s bowling for 7, but his partner Nethma Karunaratne mustered up a patient half-century to kill more time out of the game with a 132-ball 59.
Inside 51 overs, Nalanda’s bowlers were able to wrap up the rest of the wickets, mainly contributed by Jithesh Wasala who produced a brilliant bowling display with the figures of 5/69, the 10th best figures of the history of the battle of the Maroons.

The hero of the first innings, Raveen de Silva chipped in with 2 wickets and with a cushion of 157-run lead, Avishka Perera, the skipper of Nalanda College invited Ananda College to follow-on as they were staring at a glimpse of sweet victory.
The decision to set the follow-on proved to be successful for Nalandians for a while as they struck 4 times before the Tea of decisive day. Raveen de Silva again came to the party with 2 wickets.

The youngster saved his best for the biggest stage as he rescued Ananda College from a certain defeat to stretch Nalanda College’s winless streak for the 67th year.
Avishka Perera tried to be adventurous with bowling as he gave up the keeping duties and started to bowl and picked up 2 wickets before stumps.
