Ananda and Vidyartha battle for William Gopallawa shield

The 48th edition of the annual rugby encounter played between Ananda College and Vidyartha College for the William Gopallawa Shield will kick off at 4.00 p.m. on the 5th of June 2016 at the Police Park Grounds.

Believed to be one of the oldest recurrent rugby fixtures in the country, the first of its kind took place in 1962 and was an encounter with two legs. The shield was introduced in 1968 and Ananda College will play host for the first leg that would be played at Police Park this weekend.

The encounter this year is considered to be an evenly poised battle with both teams currently in the Division I Segment II. This encounter will also be considered a league game and the outcome of it will be important for the two teams in terms of the league table standings.

The 1st XV game will kick off at 4.15 p.m. while the junior matches will start in the afternoon.
