The ABA National Men and Women Elite Novices boxing meet 2014 will box off on the 25th of May 2014 and will go on till the 29th of May at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium commencing at 4.00 pm each day.

The novice’s tournament organized by the Amateur Boxing association of Sri Lanka will provide an opportunity for novice pugilists to make a name for themselves and to qualify to take part in Amateur Boxing association’s open boxing meets and tournaments. The winning boxers at the Novices meet will be automatically eligible to enter and participate at the National Boxing Championships.

Tournaments such as the Layton Cup, Clifford Cup and National Championships  are considered as Open meets and the winners and runners-up of this meet will automatically be qualified to take part in these ABA open meets which will provide ample opportunities for Pugilists to gain experience.

This National tournament will see boxers battling it out in two main categories Men’s and Women’s with 10 weight categories as follows;

The meet will be open to boxers who are between 18 and 40 which will see school Boys too competing as well with the age to be determined by the year of birth.  As of any Novices Tournament this too will be open to competitors  who have never won at a ‘Novice Meet’, ‘Intermediate Meet’, ‘Open’ or any other competition of this nature.

With medals and certificates to be received by all winners, runners-up and semi- finalists, the association went on to say that “since this is a qualifying meet, there will be no uncontested winners”.

With the recent success at the concluded Lions Cup International Boxing meet where the Sri Lankan pugilists ended up with major honours and ended up as the overall winners of the tournament, this Novice tournament will definitely prove to be an ideal breeding ground for raw talent and will nurture the Boxing fraternity of the nation in years to come.
