The 2nd round match of the Singer Schools Rugby league between St. Peter’s College and Wesley College was played today. At half time the game was poised on a knife edge at 17-10 in favor of the home side. After which they went on to dominate the proceedings and beat Wesley college to win by 31-22.

Wesley College kicked off the game and they received an early penalty as the Peterites were offside in the first few minutes but Avishka Lee couldn’t convert the penalty into points.  Just after that his brother Avantha Lee destroyed the Peterite Defense with his speed,skills and side steeping to score the first points of the game. Avishka Lee didn’t miss the conversion. (SPC 00 – 07 WC)

Soon After the try Peterites got a penalty, but Stephan Sivaraj couldn’t put the points on the board. Wesley College dominated the first 15 minutes of the game. Stephan got another penalty but the kick was not successful.

St. Peter’s was determined turn over the early pressure that Wesley College had put on them in as they were attacking for more than 10 phases. Finally the Peterite Center Thikshana Dissanayake scored in the right corner of the ground. Stephan couldn’t convert. (SPC 05 – 07 WC)

St. Peter's vs WesleyThe game was played at a smooth pace during next 10 minutes and Wesley College considered a costly penalty and Petes opted for touch this time. The decision paid off as the Peterite rolling maul was unstoppable for the double blues and Raveen Yapa scored a very important try for his side. This time Stephan added the extras for his side. (SPC 12 – 07 WC)

Few handling errors from both sides slowed down the pace of the match. St. Peter’s had added a lot of impetus since the last game and played a much improved from their previous two.  Peterites played more phases when attacking and their defense was great too. All the improvements were displayed by the Petes as they scored their third try. Wesley defended extremely well for more than 10 phases but couldn’t stop Raveen Yapa from scoring his second try. Stephan couldn’t convert  (SPC 17 – 07 WC)

Wesley College added 3 more points to their score before half time as Avishka Lee converted an easy penalty in front of the sticks. (SPC 17 – 10 WC)

The first 10 minutes of the second half was a tad quiet as both teams made handling errors and missing few goldenopportunities. Peterite scrum half Avishaka Heenpella scored the first try in the second half with his trademark dummy pass after continuous attacking phases from the Peterites. Stephan was able to convert . (SPC 24– 10 WC)

St. Peter's vs WesleyIt was then turn for the double blues to show their counter attacking strength. Smooth passing, fast running and side stepping skills were on display as Wesley College scored their second try through their winger Dineru Ranaweera. Avishka added the crucial two points. (SPC 24 – 17 WC)

St. Peter’s College responded immediately from a scrum they received just outside of the Wesley 22 meter Area. The try was created by the Peterite skipper Sandesh Jayawickrama as he went through the Wesley game line and offloaded to T hikashan Dissanayake to score his second try. Stephan’s kicking was on target this time. (SPC 31 – 22 WC)

The final try of the game showcased some great footballing skills by the double blues as a loose ball from the 50 meter line was kicked towards the Wesley try line and Dineru Ranaweera scored his second try. Avishka couldn’t add the extra points (SPC 31 – 22 WC)

Wesley College threatened to score again but the Petes defended well to ensure that the score stayed at 31 to 22.
