All-rounder Nipun Lakshan leads Thurstan to semis

Thurstan College trounced Prince of Wales College by 108 runs according to D/L method in their Singer-cup limited overs quarter-finals which concluded today at Surrey village grounds.

Cambrian skipper Vishwa Chathuranga won the toss and invited Thurstan to take the first lease of the surface. Thurstan College started off strongly as skipper Kasun Abeyrathne made a brisk 45, while hard hitting all-rounder Nipun Lakshan top scored as he stroked 82 with the bat. Right handed Sawan Prabash added the finishing touches to the innings with 43 valuable runs to steer Thurstan to a formidable 269/8 in 50 overs. Tharaka Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for the Cambrians as he grabbed 3 for 64.

In pursuit of 270, the Cambrians lost three quick wickets for 63 runs as the top order failed to deliver. Paceman Nipun Lakshan was wily with the new ball as he grabbed two Cambrian wickets as they were 88 for 4 wickets when rain interrupted play.

Left arm spinner Sandaru Dias and off-spinner Sawan Prabash were the main contributors with ball for Thurstan College as they grabbed 3 scalps a piece, while Sandun Fernando fought hard for the Cambrians with a well-made 40 as the Thurstanites cruised to the semi-finals with a comfortable win.

Richmond College vs. Maliyadeva College

The semi-final clash between the Richmond College, Galle and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala was called off due to poor ground conditions at the Panadura public grounds. The fixture will be rescheduled during the course of the next few days.
