All Island Schools 7s – Seven stars to watch out for

7336
The most pulsating Schools’ rugby season will kick off this weekend (30th & 31st) at the Royal Complex from 8.20 am onwards.

St. Peter’s were triumphant last year under the leadership of the little magician Kevin Dixon, beating the Green Machine, Isipathana College, in the cup final (7 – 5). However, the tournament is wide open this year and any team could grab the title. Science College, Mt. Lavinia, who played the fastest running game last season, will be eyeing for their first ever sevens trophy.

Here is a look at 7 players to watch out for this weekend

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sKushan Idunil – Isipathana

He had an outstanding season last year in the XV’s format and his bone crunching tackles and powerful angel running was special. Although he scored only two tries in the Singer league, his work rate had a major impact on the Green Machine as they ended as runners up in all three major school’s tournaments (7s, XV’s, Presidents Cup). He is the captain of the team this year and his leadership will be also tested.

Diyath Fernando – St. Peter’s

Speedster Fernando is said to be nursing an injury but the coaching staff believe that he will be fit for the weekend. Fernando will be a key player, as his pace will be a big part of the game along with his dazzling footwork. He scored 5 tries in the league last season. It will be a huge strength having him in the team for the defending 7s champions.

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sOmar Kuthubdeen – Wesley

Last year’s Captain will be leading the 7s team this weekend as well. Although he doesn’t look the part, he is one clever reader of the game. He has pace and the ability to sneak through any defence at any given time. Most probably he will be given the kicking duties as well and that will be a vital factor for the Double Blues throughout this season.

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sAshok Wijeykumar – Royal

Royal is not so famous for the shorter version of the game but this year they have some experience and talent in the team. Ashok can play scrum half or as outside half but he played as a 9th forward last year for the league champions. His game management will be key to the royalists’ success.

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sThanuja Maduranga – Science

A growing player with so much skill and class, certainly one to watch throughout this season. Maduranga played a monumental role for his alma-mater last year, scoring 78 points in the league with 6 tries, 10 conversions and 4 penalties under his name. His performance will have a huge impact on the success of his team.

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sGeshan Pethiyagoda – Trinity

Pethiyagoda plays football for his College but strangely he is not the kicker of the team. He was also a stand-by player in the national U20 team last year. The winger has so much skill and the ability of side stepping, which will be a worry for any opposition.

Seven players to watch out for at the All Island Schools’ 7sRomesh Priyankara – St. Joseph’s

His nick-name ‘Cheetah’ reflects his speed, strength and power. He will be leading the team for the Josephian’s this season. Romesh scored 5 tries in last year’s league and although the Joes are not favourites for the 7s title, they have been playing well in the recent past.
