Two-time world cup winning player and former New Zealand rugby captain is set to take up his first assignment as the coach when he arrives in the country in the coming weeks.
The former All Blacks player who has played 148 Tests for the All Blacks is considered to be one of the greatest of the game and is the only captain to win two back to back rugby world cups.
McCaw’s first visit to Sri Lanka in the year 2013 would have surely motivated the legendary flanker to make another visit to the country but this time he would be making his way as a mentor and not as a visitor.
Taking up a fresh challenge, the 37-year-old will be assuming the head coach duties for the national XV’s team for the upcoming Asia Division I Championship. The appointment comes after a series of discussions that Sri Lanka had with the New Zealand Rugby Board recently and it has borne fruitful results as he will take up the post of national coach.
Under Richie McCaw’s captaincy, New Zealand has emerged to be the most successful sports team in the world winning a list of titles and silverware in the past decade.
With Sri Lanka looking to come strong in the coming years, the mentoring of McCaw will surely set to motivate the national players and encourage more players to be a part of the sport.
Official sources reveal that McCaw will be arriving in the country shortly.
Happy 1st of April!
