Hameed Al Hussainie College held off a stern battle from Lumbini College to emerge Champions of the Power Horn Challenge Trophy at the 6th All-island Inter School Invitation Football tournament 2013 organized by the Group of 80’s Hameed Al Hussainie College.
The tournament commenced on 10th of January 2013 and concluded Sunday at the Sugathadasa Sports Complex Colombo.
A tremendous level of competition was witness at the final of this event with Al Hussainie taking on Lumbini College in a scorching battle which amazed the spectators at the high level of competition at school level which undoubtedly augurs well for Football in Sri Lanka.
The whites adorned by Al Hussainie were dominant in the opening phase and scored in the 27th minute thanks to M.S.M. Murshid. A few minutes later, Sarath Kumara of Lumbini in the red jersey equalized sending shock waves in the Al Hussainie camp.
In the 51st minute M A M Azard of Al Hussainie contributed another goal, but the battle was endless with Lumbini up to the task and equalizing once more through Malith Thushara in the 57th minute. The fight raged on with both teams beefing up defense preventing the other side f rom scoring. At the final whistle a penalty shoot-out was called out and Al Hussainie was brilliant in the area footing a 3-nil to clinch the championship. M A M Azard was named man of the match for the final.
The championship went to the Hameed Al Hussainie College which is the organizing school and the Lumbinions appeared as the runners up while The Hindu College emerged the 3rdplace of the tournament beating St Benedicts in the play-offs 2-nil.
N C M. Rahuman was nominated the most valuable player of the tournament as he was the highest goal scorer of the tournament with 9 goals, while F.M. AshiqMohamed elected as the best goal keeper.
Power Horn contributed greatly to this event by encouraging these young sportsmen as sponsor of the event. Speaking to ThePapare, Tariq Tayoobsthe Marketing Manager of the Power Horn stated that “we are given a great support to this event and also we are ready to do our best in the future also to uplift the Sri Lankan Sports.”
A.H.M Fauzi Senior Minister, M.N.Jamnuldeen General Manager, Power Horne and many more were involved in the presentation ceremony.
