Sri Lanka’s premier backstroke swimmer, Akalanka Peiris, currently training in Australia, clocked a time of 53.63 seconds in the Men’s 100m Backstroke short course (25m) event, smashing his own national record by a significant margin of 0.51 seconds at the Victorian Open SC Championships 2024. His performance ranks him 2nd in the event among the elite in Victoria State.
The previous record in the event was by Peiris at the South Asian Games, Kathmandu in 2019, with a time of 54.14 seconds.
Peiris is a medal winner at the South Asian Games, Asian Age Group Championships, Asian Schools Championships. He has also represented Sri Lanka at the Youth Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Youth Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and many other international competitions.
