Sri Lanka Air Force athlete Ishara Sandaruwan has cleared a height of 4.90 metres to shatter Sri Lanka’s long standing pole vault record at the on going Thailand Open Athletics Championship on Monday.

The Sri Lanka Air Force athlete cleared the height on the second day of the championship where Aravinda Chathuranga and Nilani Ratnayake were the gold medal winners for Sri Lanka.

Sandaruwan has however been placed fourth.

A former Ratnayake Central, Walala athlete, Sandaruwan is coached by Sanath Gunaratne.

Sandaruwan erased the record held by Ruwan Pradeep Perera whose mark of 4.85 metres remained unshaken since 1999.

While Sri Lanka Army’s Nilani Ratnayake has won her second gold medal of the meet by winning the women’s steeplechase, Aravinda Chathuranga has bagged the gold in the 400 metres hurdles.
