The Layton Cup organized by the Amateur Boxing Association is about to find the winners who would make it to the Taipei City Cup International Tournament as the championships close up to finals.
The semi-finalists battled and the winners are one step away from entering the international battlefields. Layton Cup semi-finals have wrapped up at Sugathadasa Indoor stadium on the 20th of July 2013. Since the winner will not only be qualified for upcoming tournaments but also be provided with financial support based on need very experienced participants too were part of the championships. For example, Prabash, who is the youngest national champion, back from Jordan a week ago did not stop to catch a break but was a part of the tournament.
I have lot of courage and hope for the event. Being back from the recent tour I’m confident about my skills but wouldn’t want to miss any opportunities.” were the words of Prabash on his quick come back. Undergoing training with Linea Clothing he won the national championships in 2012 and since then is continued to win in many international and national victories. Speaking from his experience he further mentioned “There are definitely improvements in the players. And for me it was a tough since I was taking part in a different weight category; however, I’ve managed to win both the fights within two rounds. This is not something we should be worried about but I think my experience was helpful the most. On the same note I’d like to thank many of the administrative staff of the Amateur Boxing Association for providing many players –including me- with necessary resources to participate in international tournaments and conducting these tournaments.”
As the semi-finals were taking place the while the winners were advanced to the finals the second runners up rounds took place parallel to this. These rounds drove attention of many viewers since the amateur boxers, upcoming players are most likely to be trapped within these ranks. Representing all weight categories there were 10 Men’s events and 8 Women’s event’s to pick the third places of the event. Considering the female events many of the victories were distributed among MAS Southern and Army teams. KAD Dharmathilake, HGWS Chathurika, IWSS Chandrasekara, HS Priyadarshani, WMDDK Weerabahu were the winner of 2nd runners up positions for MAS and Army respectively. Among the rest of the players who were to walk away at third places were HGWS Chathurika, BWGWC Edirisinghe and Upeksha Madushani from Navy and Air Force Teams.
In the Men’s event the first to take place was the over 91kg weight ckkfategory – Super Heavy weight. Returning to the ring after a day’s break the game was intense as expected. Karuanayake and Kumaran from Navy and police respectively were in it to win. They had changing rounds and the coaches weren’t at any rest while the fight was going on either. The supporters were screaming with weak points of the opponents and it was about to break out control as the bell rang of the final round. At last Police had to settle with loss making K Karunayake the champ.
Following this Hevy weight, Light Heavy weight, Middle weight, Welter Weight Light Welter weight, Light weight, Bantam weight, Fly weight and Light Fly weight events took place. As the finalists proved their victories guaranteeing their perseverance in the tournament following is a list of the 2nd runners up winners.
