The ABA Men and Women Novices championship organized by the Ameture Boxing Association of Sri Lanka came to an end yesterday at the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium, Colombo.
With 19 bouts being completed in the final day in different weight categories, the meet saw the participation of 246 boxers; 193 in the Men’s category and 52 participants in the Women’s category representing 20 clubs. The final day was graced by Dr. Surgeon commodore E.W. Jayasinghe, the International Technical Officer and Member of the medical commission AIBA.
The Sri Lanka army SC recorded 5 final wins while, Unichela recorded 4 final wins ending up with major honors. K.G. Padmasiri of the Army emerged as the Best Boxer of the meet in the Men’s category beating best loser R.M.K.K. Bandara of the Navy. In the women’s category, W.M.D.D.K. Weerabahu of the Army beat K.M.D. Sajani of MASS to be awarded as the best boxer.
Emerging champion or runner up at this Novices tournament means that these pugilists get the opportunity to compete at open National Boxing Championships. Tournaments such as the Layton Cup, Clifford Cup and Winners and runners-up of this meet will automatically be qualified to take part in these ABA open meets which will take place in the near future.
