The Sri Lankan Men’s 4x400m relay team managed to win a gold medal yesterday (21) at the 1st Asian Relay Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

Sri Lanka managed to win a silver medal in the Mixed 4x400m relay event on the first day of the inaugural championship. The Women’s 4x100m relay team entered the competition today, but were unfortunately placed fifth in the event. Their finishing time was recorded as 44.58 seconds.

After this, the Men’s 4x100m relay team entered the track to race, and they managed to get fourth place in the event with a timing of 40.53 seconds.

This was followed up by the 4x400m relay events, which were considered as the main medal hopes of Sri Lanka. However, yesterday was not very auspicious for the Women’s team, who entered the track first. They placed fourth in the event with a time of 3.36.56 minutes. Tharushi Karunaratne’s loss of participation in this event and in the Mixed 4x400m relay event was particularly noticeable.

Right after the event, the big race was all set in the midst of rain in Bangkok. The Sri Lankan Men’s 4x400m relay team entered the track – their performance was so special that they managed to win the gold medal by recording a time of 3.04.48 minutes beating the Indians.

Aruna Darshana, Pasindu Kodikara, Dinuka Deshan and Kalinga Kumara were the golden boys for Sri Lanka in this event. Kalinga, who competed as the last runner of the relay, managed to grab the gold medal for Sri Lanka, who had been in second place until he got the baton and brought them up to first place with a spectacular run. While Sri Lanka won the gold medal in this event, it can be mentioned that this happened to be a special occasion where India, who qualified for the Olympics by participating in the recently concluded World Relay Championship, had to settle for the silver medal after Sri Lanka. It can also be understood that all these events that were held today were interrupted by heavy rain, which made it difficult for the runners to reach their best times.
