Helpless C.W.W. Kannangara College fell in the valorous hands of Kingswood College, as the Kingsmen went on to riot the former beating them scoring 60 points to nil in their Division I segment encounter played at CR & FC this evening.
Kingswood College coming in to the third week with an unlucky loss in their last game against St. Peters were out to get some points under their name to keep their title hopes still alive. The debutants in the School Rugby top tier, CWW weren’t having the gala time they expected as they fell in the hands of the heavyweights, St. Joseph’s and Isipathana who both scored a 50+ points aggregate against them.
The game started with Kingswood getting the sin-bin notice as Lock forward Gunarathna shown the yellow card. Having the one man advantage by their side, the hosts were unable to get themselves the early breakthrough. As Kingswood started settling matters on the field, it was their wing-three P.N. Marambe who stepped two players without any ease to score #1 for the hosts. Skipper Raffaideen converted the 44m conversion to give the early lead (7-0).
Reeza Raffaideen who was Kingswood’s arsenal in the previous seasons, showcased his level of potency as he scored two back to back tries, both covering over 40 meters under the posts. With him converting the two he scored, he single handedly took the Kingswood score to 21 points. With enough and more time to execute play, Kingswood’s Chathura Seneviratna opted to go for a drop goal attempt which was successful as Kingswood drifted further 3 points ahead (24-00).
It was one way traffic in the 1st half with CWW not even having a glimpse of their attacking 22m at any time of play. Over went Adeeb Jibran to bring in the next try for the Kingswoodians as Kingswood took the pack weight advantage. (29-00) The first half fireworks continued to come from the Kingswood end as that try was followed up by his counterpart prop Sanoj Malaka who scored off the forward moving maul (34-00). With Raffaideen kicking the conversion through, scores jolted up to 36-00.
Just minutes before the call for lemons, the hefty center back for the Kings, Narada Wellangiriya showcased a master-class act as he stepped in two oncoming defenders and offloaded the ball onto Reeza Reffaideen inches before the try line as Reffaideen made his hat-trick of tries. (41-00)
Half Time 41-00
The second half was no difference to the first as the Kingswoodians were experimenting their various attacking set pieces. Skipper Raffaideen made the opening statement for the second half with his cameo side step move once again but missed out on the conversion (46-00).
With the scoreboard ticking only one side, the hosts were all out to get at least some points on board. The young CWW side lacked exposure to the main arena as their execution was very poorly delivered. The second half was a sloppy affair with both teams ending up halting play owing to poor ball handling. CWW could not afford to make any mistakes in ball handling as they were almost close to getting a score but failed at the last resort. Towards the 25th minute of play, over went Kingswood’s Adeeb Jibran for another try off a 5 meter quick tap to take the score over the 50 mark. Raffaideen converted (53-00).
Helpless, the hosts tried to get their luck through a penalty off the boot of B.M.H Peiris but that too ended up landing in no man’s land. To conclude the Kingswood effort, it was Siriwardena who went through for the last time which was a well executed set piece between Narada Wellangiriya and Faris Ali. With the easy conversion through, the game ended with Kingswood registering an overwhelming 60-00 victory.
It was one way traffic all throughout to the end. CWW Kannnangara Vidyalaya seems to have fielded in a very fresh outfit for this season and thereby they seem to lack composure in handling heavyweights in the tournament. It was disappointing to see them not being able to score at least a single point on board this evening.
ThePapare names skipper Reeza Raffaideen for his magnificent performance, scoring the four tries and for his kicking duties. Kingswood College register their second win for the season and prospects for the upcoming games look favorable.
