Delmage and MAS progressed forward in the Mercantile Tennis championships that commenced last Friday at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts.

The Mercantile tournament this year consists of 12 events that includes veteran categories for over 35 years and includes a total of 99 players.

After three days of action, it has been Delmage and MAS who have received the privilege to progress forward in the draw. Delmage Foresynth is represented by Waruna Chandrasiri and are grouped in Division III. Chandrasiri defeated Siddeaq Mohemad of Amana Bank 6-2, 6-4 to advance on to the next and has booked his spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Chathuranga Kannangara of Kent Engineers. Chandrasiri is the top seeded player in the division and will meet Nishath Nawaz of Amana or Shehan Ferdinandez of MAS.

Mercantile Tennis Tournament 2015 - Day 3Rain delayed progress of a few games during the weekend and the remainder of the round-robin games in the third division are expected to commence this morning. Meanwhile there had been only three entries in the Men’s Singles Division one, thereby making it a round robin draw.

The first game of the Division I segment took place between Amit Weerasinghe and Mohemad Shaakir of J. L. Harrison and Shaakir emerged as a victor winning the match 6-2, 6-2. There remains two more games for both of these players and they will also need to meet Shehan Gomez of MAS who would is most likely tipped to take the title.

MAS and Dialog proved out to be the best performers in the Men’s Singles Division II making progress on to the quarterfinals. Sanjeev Walgampaya of MAS made his way to the quarter defeating Ravindra Gunawardena of DFCC and later Aaqil Yakoob of Amana Bank 6-0,6-0. Representing Dialog and making his way to the quarters is Buddhika Nilaweera who won the game against seeded player Mafaz Mohideen from MAS.

The quarterfinal clashes of the Men’s Singles are set to commence tomorrow while the doubles encounters will also see a start tomorrow.
