The 65th Battle of the Gold’s encounter between Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa is to be held on the 13th and 14th of March followed by the 30th limited over encounter on the 15th of March to be played at the De Soyza Stadium, Moratuwa. A press conference was held today in regard to the proceedings.
Moratuwa is a town in the paradise isle where cricket is taken very seriously. Residents generally follow cricket with passion and there is a list of illustrious cricketers joining the national ranks from the town. The Battle of the Gold’s is the clash between the two school giants in the town; Prince of Wales’ College and St. Sebastian’s College, both which have nurtured talent and entertained the nation.
The Principal of Prince of Wales’ College, Mr. J.W.S. Siriwardane emphasized that this encounter is merely a friendly rivalry and at the end of the day it’s the friendships and the memories that will be taken forward for the years to come, “we look to create greater bonds of relationships between the two schools” he added.
Rector of St. Sebastian’s College, Rev. Father Boney Fernandopulle too added on the fact of the friendly rivalry between the schools and also said that “we not only focus on giving students the education but ensure that we nurture good human beings of use to the society and through sports we teach compassion and to accept wins and defeats”. He added finally that “this is a time for the old boys to meet and enjoy but, they should bear in mind to keep to avoid disputes and to ensure that no interruptions are made to the game.
Elephant house and Singer have come forward to sponsor this event and with the wishes of the old boys and the staff of both schools, one can only expect one of the best big matches in terms and cricket and the atmosphere at encounter where the spirits are noticeable and the Cricket ever enjoyable.
