First ever Fencing championships concluded

The very first Fencing Championship 2012 was work off on 20th at the Panadura Unichela premises and was conclude on the 21st.

This championship which was organized by the Unichela Fencing club in collaboration with the National Association of Fencing Srilanka (NAFSL) is to felicitate and enhance the national fencers. 

With the participation of 7 national fencing teams, there were team and individual competitions which were categorized under Foil, Sabre and Epee. MDS Fencing club was the first to get on the stage to receive the foil team championship by defeating Slimline Fencing club Pannala, by a narrow margin of 45 to 44 points.  Unichela Fencing club and Southern Fencing Association battled for the Epee team championship and the Southern Fencing association emerged as the champion  45 to 43 points. And Unichela Fencing Club had a commendable championship as it adjudged as the winner of sabre team competition for an unassailable score of 45 to 17 points. Unichela defeated its counterpart Thurulie to win the game. 

Kanchana Sadalanka of Slimline Fencing club was crowned the champion of Foil women individual direct elimination by scoring 15 points. Her competitor, Ashoka Udayangani failed at hers and was able just to of earn 13 points. And also Kanchana Madubhashini of Unichela Fencing Club emerged as the Victorian of the Sabre women individual direct elimination by defeating Nadeesha Karunarathne of Thurulie for a score of 15 to 9 points. 

By astonishing the visitors, Pradeep Dunukiyange of Slimline received the trophy for the best fencer of the championship. Slimline Fencing club was the overall championship winner while Unichela received  honors as the overall runners-up. 

The prizes for the winners were given by Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, chief minister, central province, Dian Gomez group Director MAS holdings, Ushan Abeywickrema, President NAFSL, Kasuni Silva, Secretary General,  NAFSL and the other guests. NAFSL will introduce fencing to the school level as it received the authorization of the education ministry and is in hope to produce 4 more national level fencing teams with in the year of 2013.

Silver Chamara Nuwan (Slimline fencing club)

Bronze – Ishara Dharmasena (MDS fencing club)

Sabre Individual Men

Gold – Sadesh Chandana (Unichela fencing club)

Silver – Manjula Fernando (Unichela fencing club)

Bronze – Chanuka Soysa  (Unichela) Gayan Jayarathne (Southern fencing club)

Foil Individual women
