Kusalya, Detuni cause the biggest upsets at 47th National Carrom Championships

The quarter final stages of the 47th National Carrom Championships took place during the weekend at the Carrom Headquarters in Maharagama.

 

Results – Women’s Singles 

Sri Lanka`s number one ranked Joseph Roshita beat Sadini Nirasha who is ranked number eleven with a comprehensive win of 25/14, 25/15. Causing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament Detuni Nomaya ranked number six in the island beat RADM Kanchanamala who is ranked on the top three of the list at ease – 16/25, 25/14, 25/8. 

Kusalya Vidanagama ranked number fourteen on the national list beat Buddhini Dias ranked number seven following another surprise of the tournament  with a score of – 25/16, 25/20

Chalani Lakmali Liyanage second on the national standings retained her position by beating Maduwanthi Gunadasa who is ranked number eighth with a score of – 25/01, 25/6

Semi Finals and Finals of Women’s Singles will be played on the last day of the tournament which is the 7th of February 2015

Highlights of the tournament – Women`s Singles  

Kusalya Vidanaagama a school girl aged 15 years from Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya at present is ranked No.14 and she defeated the No.4 ranked player Arosha Wickremasinghe in the 3rd round 25/19, 18/24, 23/18 and also defeated the next player Buddhini Dias who is Sri Lanka No.7 in the pre quarter finals 25/16, 25/20 and entered the Semi Finals as given above.  

Detuni Nomaya  is a  17 year old also from Dharmapala Vidayalaya, Pannpitiya  ranked No.6 and she defeated Rebecca Dalrene No. 14 in the 3rd round 25/5, 12/19, 20/16 and went on to beat RADM  Kanchanamala Sri Lanka No. 3 player – 16/25, 25/14, 25/8 as given above and reached Semi Finals . 

The line-up therefore for Semi Finals will be Joseph Roshita Sri Lanka No. 1 vs. Detuni Nomaya and Chalani Lakmali Sri Lanka No.2 vs Kusalya Vidanagama. 

Results – Mixed Doubles 

W.D.Nishantha Fernando/Chalani Lakmali Liyanage beat RAW Lahiru Eshan/Joseph Roshita 25/19, 17/25, 25/15 in the first semi-finals while Chamil Cooray/RADM Kanchanamala beat Mohamed Shaheed/Rebecca Dalrene – 25/9, 25/18 in the second semi-final and qualify for the final rounds of the National Carom Championships.  

Highlights of the tournament – Mixed Doubles & Men`s Singles 

Finals bottom seeded Chamil Cooray/RADM Kanchanamala beat top seeds W.D.Nishantha Fernando/Chalani Lakmali Liyanage – in a three – setter – 6/25, 25/18 and 25/8

Veterans Singles finals Upali Premachandra beat A.W.M.Ikram – in straight sets 25/4, 25/0

Next week will feature the events of Men’s Singles on 31st January where the last 16 players will be selected. Thereafter on 1st February these 16 players will play the 16 Sri Lanka ranked Men’s Singles players in the Rankers event, which will also be an event to look forward to.
