Zimbabwe World Cup squad: Hamilton Masakadza in; Sibanda misses out

Zimbabwe have announced their 15-man squad for ICC Cricket World Cup, 2015. The squad, led by Elton Chigumbura, largely features players who have performed well for Zimbabwe over the last few years.

Hamilton Masakadza, who made his ODI debut way back in 2001, will feature in his first World Cup. Prosper Utseya, who has been banned from bowling off-breaks alone due to a suspect action, has also been included.

Chief selector, Givemore Makoni, said “He (Utseya) is our mystery spinner, bowling mediums and cutters, and his experience will be vital for us.”

Newly appointed coach, Dav Whatmore, said that he was happy with the squad and added, “I’ve personally spoken to all those who missed out and assured them that they are still part of the future.”

Vusi Sibanda, who has played 119 ODIs for Zimbabwe, was omitted from the squad. Sibanda though has been named as one amongst the 5 non-traveling reserves. The others in that list are John Nyumbu, Brian Vitori, Malcolm Waller and Cephas Zhuwao.

“Vusi is unlucky to miss out but we’ve gone with the guys in form,” said Makoni and re-iterated the same point when asked about the exclusion of left-arm pacer, Brian Vitori.

“The bowlers we picked ahead of him have done better. Panyangara and Chatara are the choices we’ve gone with,” he said.
