The Girls’ School Boxing Championships for Westgate Cup – 2014 came to an end yesterday at the Linea Gymnasium, Kandy Industrial Park (BOI), Pallekele, Kandy.
After 3 days of exciting Boxing action, the final day of the Boxing met saw many enthusiastic boxing followers and teams gather at the Arena to support their teams and to follow the sport which is gaining much popularity in the country at present.
In the final bout in the Schools’ girl’s category (33-35 kg) SR Kumari of Ellakanda MMV won convincingly the Gold medal beating GSK Perera Prajapathi BMV. Kumari seemed very composed and seemed to have studied her opponent as she took a very calculated approach handling Perera who’s defense was caught slacking. In the end it was a comfortable win for Kumari who walked away with gold for the 33-35 kg weight category.
Another interesting final was the Schools’ Girls (39-41Kg), where HG Surangi Imesha of Grohhill College met MGD Mihirawi of Pallebowala MMV. The bout was a well contested one with both pugilists making very little mistakes and once again taking a very calculated approach in offence as well as defense. However Mihirawi’s upper cuts and short jabs won her the gold in her weight category.
The Junior Girls (44-46Kg) category Gold medal was won by GGD Kaushalya of Arangala NC beating KGP Rashadi of Prajapathi BV. Kaushalya seemed technically sound in her offence while Rashadi’s defense wasn’t up to the mark. Her hands were not held up resulting in receiving some hardy blows on the face.
Pallebowala MMV walked away as the champions of the inaugural Westgate cup boxing championship 2014 while Narandeniya MMV came short of a few points to being awarded champions. The Best Boxer award was won by GGD Kaushalya of Arangala NC who competed in the Junior Girls 44-46Kg category while the Best Looser award was won by KGP Rashadi of Prajapathi BV competing in the Junior Girls 44-46Kg category.
