Sports extravaganza organized for the 4th consecutive year by Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology commenced today 29th of November at Police Park grounds.
It is the biggest inter-university sporting event and will feature sports such as rugby, cricket, basketball, swimming, football and badminton among government and private universities.
Day 1 of the sports extravaganza was held at Police park grounds it was the battle between the rugby teams as well as the basketball teams from multiple state and private universities.
Rugby
Eight universities competed for the ultimate title of 10 a side rugby, among these universities APIIT, Auston, Moratuwa and NSBM teams showed a promising start from the beginning. Preliminary round was conducted in two groups group A and group B, out of which depending on the scores obtained, the teams got divided in to three categories to compete for the bowl, cup and the plate championships. The results were as follows;
For the qualification for the bowl championship teams ACBT and RI competed where ACBT emerged winners with a score of 12-0 and also from teams BMS and SLIIT, BMS emerged as winners with a score of 12-5. The two winners then competed for the bowl championship where ACBT emerged as champions with a score of 15-0.
For the qualification for the cup championship teams Auston and Moratuwa competed where Moratuwa emerged winners with a score of 25-5 and also from teams APIIT and NSBM, NSBM emerged as winners with a score of 26-5. The match ran into some controversies with arguments between NSBM players and referees cropping up.
After a brief interval the two winners NSBM and Moratuwa then competed for the cup championship, where Moratuwa emerged as champions with a score of 17-5. The Moratuwa team seemed well tuned and didn’t leave space for any errors. Therefore from the beginning it was apparant that they were going to emerge as champions.
For the qualification for the plate championship teams Auston and APIIT competed and Auston won with a score of 20-0.
Basketball
Basketball preliminary rounds were held on 29th of November at the Police Park grounds. Basketball show cased the participation of a lot of universities like APIIT, IIT, ANC, NSBM, ACBT, RIC, CINEC, SLIIT, ICBT, BMS, university of Colombo and Auston.
The women’s matches were between three universities and the scores are as follows;
RI vs. SLIIT – 04 – 12
APIIT vs. SLIIT – 12 – 19
APIIT vs. RIC – 04 – 15
The men’s matches were very entertaining for the spectators and some of the matches worth mentioning with exceptional performance in scoring are;
BMS vs. University of Colombo – 02 – 26
APIIT vs. University of Colombo – 17 – 09
ACBT vs. IIT – 17 – 05
Overall, day 01 of the sports extravaganza was good with a turnout of a lot of spectators, supporters as well as unbelievable talent.
