The Defence Services Hockey Tournament 2014 was successfully concluded on last Thursday at the Astro Turf Hockey grounds in Colombo. This year’s tournament was played under two categories, Men’s and Women’s, representing Army SC, Navy SC and Air Force SC to secure the title.
The Women’s Hockey team from Navy SC played remarkably well in the entire tournament beating Army SC by 15 points to nil in order to make the grades for the finals between Air Force SC. In the Women’s finals, Navy SC’s B.N.M. Jayaneththi scored the first goal of the match astonishing the Air Force SC and the scoreboard read one all at the breather. Few minutes after the whistle was blown for the second half, Jayaneththi from Navy SC scored her second goal. Y.M.B.N.K. Gunarathna later on scored her first and last goal of the game totaling the scoreboard three all to prevail the Women’s title. B.N.M. Jayaneththi from Navy SC played wonderfully well to make her team conquest the Women’s championship.
In the Men’s Category, Air Force beats Army SC and made their way to the finals with the Navy SC. However the sailors were not successful with regard to their women’s pack, where they went down by four points to one in the final match. Fernando from Air Force SC’s scored two goals under his name while Wijeratne and Abeyratne scored a goal each to bring their team to conquest the Men’s title. Jayarathne from Navy SC was the one and only goal scorer for his team.
