The prolific No 8 and lock forward Isuru Rangala will captain the Trinity College 1st XV side for the upcoming 2015 season. The announcement of captain was made ahead of purview to the 2015 rugby season.
Coloursman Isuru Rangala who would be playing his fifth year in the prestigious red,gold & blue jersey played a key role in this years rugby league which allowed the Lions outfit to finish in the second place. Ever since he made the field way back in the year 2011, Rangala has groomed himself to be a prospective third-row and a regular in the team’s starting lineup uninterruptedly. His forte lies within his agility and power where he posed a huge threat against their opposition last season.
Having represented the Commonwealth Sevens squad and having the honor of representing the U20 outfit during the recently concluded Junior ASIAD, Isuru Rangala is equipped with an enormous amount of experience both locally and internationally. As he takes up the reigns as skipper for the upcoming season, he would be assisted by his deputy Sachintha Dissanayaka. Dissanayaka, having captained a Trinity side at the under 18 level will be second in command this year while the Lions will field in a balanced outfit this upcoming season.
With Irishman Eric Miller taking command of Trinity rugby for the upcoming year, it would be interesting to see as to how he integrates his knowledge and technicality on to the Trinity side.
ThePapare had the privilege of speaking with Isuru Rangala about his intentions and how it feels to captain the Lions’ unit and here’s what he had to share“I am indeed honored by this gesture and it had been by long standing dream to lead the Trinity 1st XV side. Playing alongside my team mates and my former predecessors, I realize how crucial and how important it is on my behalf to lead a team of this caliber and I hope that I would be able to go that extra mile. This year we compiled a balanced team with a mixture of different personalities when compared to last season. The last season gave way to realize and look into new talent and groom them to represent the first side. I know that clearly there would be lot on my side, especially having won the prestigious Bradby Shield for four consecutive years. Having spent most of my time on the rugby field for the last four years, I understand what it feels to be on the winning side as well as ending up on the losing team. Nevertheless I am certain that I with my senior men the rest of the team will live beyond the expectations and aim for the highest possible standard”
